Interview with our Skalleague Melita Wade Thorpe

Founder and CEO of MWT Associates, Inc.

SKAL Board position: Past President at SKAL INTERNATIONAL SAN FRANCISCO.

When did you join SKAL?

I joined SKAL in 1994. I was a Charter member of the San Jose Club but I moved immediately to the San Francisco Club because the membership was more diverse with all categories of SKAL.

What are your best memories at SKAL?

Without any doubt, I would say that the camaraderie of fellow Skalleagues in our home club San Francisco and the connection with Skalleagues around the world as they visit our Club or as I visit theirs.

One of my best memories was on safari in Kenya, the Nairobi Club officers called an executive board meeting and cocktail reception at the Norfolk Hotel in my honor.

“Doing business with Skalleagues around the world, you are guaranteed success”

What has SKAL brought you in your career/business?

COMMUNITY. Doing business with Skalleagues around the world, you are guaranteed success. Skalleagues are trustworthy with much experience to do their best for you.

I have many examples but a few stand out:

Traveling to Norway, the Bergen Club President and members showed great hospitality and recommendations for other services, such as airport transfers.

While staying at the Fiesta Americana Hotel in Puerto Vallarta, the GM was the Puerto Vallarta Club President and personally invited me as his guest to their club luncheon at the new, luxurious St. Regis Punta Mita. The Club members waited for our arrival to begin their luncheon and were most hospitable. I was able to network with other Puerto Vallarta industry leaders of the Club.

Have you ever attended a world congress? When? How was it?

Yes I attended several World Congresses. My favorites are Budapest, Hungary and Sydney, Australia. Their hospitality was over the top.

I was lucky to do great touristic excursions:

-Budapest: The entire Congress was transported via an antique train out into the country for dinner and a show. We enjoyed a Tokaj Wine tasting.

-Sydney: Scenic luncheon cruise in the Sydney Harbor was unforgettable.

I also attended the NASC Conference in Puerto Vallarta. Mexico was a fantastic experience with tasty dine around at various restaurants.

Why would you recommend someone to join SKAL?

CONNECTIONS. If you want to succeed in the travel business, you must be a member of SKAL. In SKAL you have contacts around the world who are experienced and trustworthy.
