January 6th, 2022 - AGM @Ula Restaurant

After 3 years as President of SKAL International San Francisco, Robin Morales delivered her farewell speech at our Annual General Meeting.

Thank you Robin for keeping our club strong and engaged during the pandemic.

Greetings fellow Skalleagues and welcome 2022! Let’s kiss 2021 goodbye and look further down the road as we travel to new destinations!

This has been a year of patience and perseverance, responsiveness, and resiliency. We, as a SKAL club are still standing strong together, doing what we do best – uniting as one, engaging, embracing and empathizing with each other through good times and bad and keeping the Spirit of SKAL alive.

SKAL affords us the ability to forge friendships for a lifetime – both professionally and personally. We adhere to the motto of “doing business amongst friends” and it’s wonderful to know we have friends mostly everywhere we travel.

We can be proud to know ours is the world’s largest international networking organization. We may act locally here in San Francisco but being who we are as travel and tourism professionals we think globally as citizens of the world. Furthermore, through our travels we act as ambassadors who can truly promote PEACE THROUGH TOURISM by learning about, respecting, appreciating, and loving our fellow denizens here on Earth.

San Francisco SKAL has benefitted all of us greatly over the years. We worked hard this last year to manage our meetings, either virtually or in-person, thanks to the efforts of our talented Board and Jean-Francois Drageon relentlessly finding venues that can accommodate our delicate price point.

We have to especially thank Mike Caplin, our rock, our Chief Engineer who keeps this club running!

We have been blessed with the Communications skills of Franck Legrand who prompted us to stay in touch with relevant events and issues and along with Andrey Zaharenko, helped us orchestrate an amazing three-way collaboration with the San Jose and Sacramento SKAL clubs to produce our SKAL International Month presentation to the SI world audience.

We have the kind generosity of so many others to thank – Krishan Miglani, Kirsti Maki, Jean-Francois Drageon, Brigitta Amman and Holly Huebel who reached into their pockets to give back to the club. Our club as whole can also be proud of our collective charity giving to other clubs elsewhere in their times of desperation and need.

Let’s reflect on all we’ve accomplished this year:

JAN – Virtual AGM and SIP Cocktails (Don’t we do cocktails well?)

FEB – We held a very enjoyable online WINE AUCTION and raised funds for our scholarship program

MAR – Virtual meeting with guest speaker Kelly Powers of the Hotel Council of SF

APR – “Spring Fling” outdoor dining at Café Bastille/B44 restaurant with guests from the local Asian-American community

MAY – In-person meeting again outdoors on the terrace at Zingari where I introduced two new members, Anthony Cooper and Marianne Emblad. We froze our asses off but had a blast anyway!

JUN – Lunch meeting at John’s Grill with guest presentation from fellow San Jose Skalleague, Alene Peaceman of Club Med

AUG – SKAL outing to an Oakland A’s baseball game suite organized by Mike Caplin

SEP - Lunch meeting at E&O Restaurant with guest presentation by Bertin Salas of Visit CA

OCT - We returned to one of our favorite venues, Bistro Boudin at Fisherman’s Wharf, where we once again kept the bartenders very busy – so many Martini’s at once!

NOV – We held our annual Silent Auction at Basque Cultural Center where we fund-raised a healthy sum of $4,402.00!

DEC – We celebrated the holiday season with a delicious brunch on a perfect weather day at the SF Italian-American Athletic Club in North Beach

Yes, it’s been quite a year but I look forward to enjoying an even better one coming under the realm of our new, incoming President, Jean-Francois Drageon!

To Jean-Francois - it is with great pleasure to anoint thee with the Presidential Regalia of SKAL San Francisco!

Cheers to all and a hearty “Thank You” for a wonderful year.

Robin
